Hi!

I'm thinking about to buy Irish Art During the Viking Invasions, 800-1020 A.D. by Francoise Henry. Does someone have it?
I've seen marvelous hanging bowl via Google books preview.
Is it worth buying or not?

Hi Oleg,
I studied archaeology in university and work by Henry was considered very important - however it has been somewhat dated. Id recommend buying it as a very good introduction and then maybe look at:

"The Archaeology Of Late Celtic Britain And Ireland" Lloyd Lang

Some weeks ago I found a related point of attention from the Westcoast of Scotland.
From the early medieval period onwards they had the Iona art style, an art style closely connected to the old Irish art. Unfortunately there is very little information about this style, I already contacted some trusts with little result.

Does anyone have some information about it or know sources we can use for research?

One of the places to try might be Ritchie, G. (ed.) 'The Archaeology of Argyll' (Edinburgh, Edinburgh University Press,1997)
As far as I remember there is a discussion on the Ionan art style there.
One of the main links discussed about this link is the bird-nest style boss which appears in Ionan art, and may have had some relation to Irish art. Other than that, try Foster, S., 'Picts, Gaels and Scots' (1996). I think she has a brief discussion on it.

Rithcie does have a discussion on the sculpture of Iona, and its link with Ireland. Check it out. It has been over 2 years since I've read it. But there's sure to be further sources in his bibliography.

I've checked the book(Irish Art During the Viking Invasions, 800-1020 A.D.), it doesn't contain any references to the special art style.
However, there are some notes about different patterns, unusual for the Ireland, used by artists in Iona for depicting the Christ and evangelists.

Thank you for the information. I will buy the book 'The Archaeology of Argyll' this week. I hope the National Museum of Edinburgh has some information about it too. I contacted them this week. Probably there is an index of all the Iona style grave slabs from the westcoast of Scotland.
