Ah, that image brings back bad (sorry good) memories of bone breaking work on a Living History farm at wheat harvesting time! Harvesting wheat with a hand sickle, gathering it by hand, whacking it with a flail on the floor, and winnowing the wheat heads with a basket! Good times, good times! And yes, the pitch fork is made from a single tree branch or sappling. Some times you get lucky and find a sappling with three or four forks.
