Does anyone have any photos of horse tack saddles, bits, stirrups etc for this time? I have an illustration of the bow from the Fishamble find. I have a fair quality photo of a saddle bow from Ballincarriga, Co Westmeath. I have a few pics from the Osberg find and one from Novgorod. Basically I want to make one for 950 to 1066 from the tree up. Thanks for any help.

Hi,
I'm not sure of the time scale of this saddle but I was recently in the conservation dept of the National Museum and they were conserving fragments of a saddle. If this interested you they might be able to help you out if you were looking for fine detail. There are only fragments left of the metal bits, eg at the pommel and seat back.
It may be too corroded but its just a suggestion.

The guys from Ulfhednar did some saddle reconstructions. Klick link, then follow to "equipment" and go further to "Handwerk/Sattelbau". Page in German only, but they're perfect in English. Contact Arian for some help - surely he will!
