Yup, Daibhi O Croinin is the editor of the first volume. There's a limited preview of that on Google Books too, which may come in handy as it's a relatively expensive, but fantastic, book.

The paperback version is available now for about 37euro from Waterstones. In Cork at least. No reason why it can't be the same elsewhere. Much cheaper than the 80odd for the hard back version. So not too bad.

well, the BPL does indeed have them, but they are for "in library use only". which means i'd have to travel an hour in to the city to get to them, lol. looks like these books are selling for +$60, so i'll have to decided if i can invest in them. on the upside, someone here or somewhere else gave me the link http://www.massanswers.org/ which can connect me to an online librarian. so maybe that will help me access from afar.

seems these books are this community's go-to guides, and its exactly the sort of stuff i'll need. thanks again folks. i'll be sure to bring any other questions around to you all when the need arises. 8-)

I'm sure there's a good few here that wouldn't mind reading over bits for you when the time comes! :)

that sounds like a stellar resource. i might need to run up a several hunnerd dollars, and start stocking a shelf of 'books of ireland', *laughs, cries*

*update edit*
and some good newe, i found a website that searches for price comparisons on all sorts of things: http://www.dealoz.com/search

i used it to find a used copy of 'a guide to early irish law' for about $38 USD w/free s&h. baddaboom!

the book donal just listed is still too new to go for cheap yet. lowest price dealoz found me was still over $100 USD. s'all good, though. i'm happy to work with one bargain price at a time, rofl. still, thanks for all your help, people. keeping me productive ;)
