King's Jelling: Denmark's Imperial Centre

will be delivered by Professor Klavs Randsborg (University of Copenhagen)

in Boole 2 at 7pm on Thursday 19th February

Jelling is the most important archaeological complex in Viking Age Denmark. Most of its impressive array of monuments date from the tenth century and may be linked with the Jelling Dynasty, most notably with King Harald Blatand.

1200 BC and the Big Turmoil

Professor Kristian Kristiansen
University of Gothenberg

This lecture will examine the role of central and northern Europe in the downfall of the Mycenean and Hittite civilizations after 1200 BC. Professor Kristiansen takes a new look at the European evidence to see how effects of political turmoil in the east Mediterranean at this time are reflected in the archaeological record elsewhere in Europe. He also presents new ideas on the origin of the mysterious Sea Peoples.

Lecture Abstract
Glossed as the “white plague” during the 19th century, tuberculosis was considered a minor health risk during the second half of the 20th century. Today, however, the disease has re-emerged as a global threat. Long thought to have appeared in the Eastern Mediterranean approximately 8,000 years ago when herd animals transferred bovine Mycobacterium tuberculosis to our species, tuberculosis is now considered to be as old or older than H. sapiens. This shift in perspectives results from rapidly accumulating molecular evidence. In this lecture, I will integrate such molecular perspectives and archaeological evidence to explore the long term relationship between our species and this persistent pathogen.
