I just contacted "Westland Crafts". Their shoes looked pretty good. Imagine my surprise when the responce came from Pakistan...well, not surprised at all. Bad thing is, their shoes look pretty good!

Well, for me, I like to buy as local as I can. Some stuff just can't be made economically other than in low wage locations but stuff like shoes are made local by skilled craftsmen so there is something of a conflict.

As Brendan said, the unfortunate reallity is that for many hand-produced items, we in the Living History game have to go to Pakistan or India to obtain reproductions. Many westerners will simply not deal with these items due to the time and effort involved to produce them. It isn't worth their time and effort. Yes, I would rather help the "Little Guy" who is doing craftmanship type work, but what are you going to do?

True, I have made lots of stuff myself but appreciate the boundaries of my skill, patience and repetitive injury strain...and time is the limiting factor

A lot of really good product comes out of that part of the world, much of it stuff we could not afford to have made here. Some other stuff that can be made here comes out at a price that cant be competed with.
And yet...there is a part of me that likes buying stuff from people who are living in the same country/region as me whose business started from an interest in the history of the culture I am representing. And there is nothing quite like getting custom work done by a really good craftsperson that you have met in person. I guess it is a point where it transitions into art from functio...or something like that.
