This account is from "A Booke of Questions and Answers concerning the Warrs or Rebellions of the Kingdome of Irelande" by Hiram Morgan. The introduction says that it was most likely written by Captain Nicholas Dawtrey in 1597. He was an eyewitness who served in Ireland. The introduction also says that he had not been in Ireland for 12 years at this time but he is discussing the current forces of the Irish in the Nine Years War. So this account is accurate to at least 1585 but possibly later. That date is after Derrickes images so it also validates his work as credible. It also validates the use of an "Irish Targe" for both horsemen and kern(together with the historical examples we have in the O'Donovan and Bell targes). Looks to be overwhelming evidence to me of Irish Horsemen using shields in the late 16th century.
